WRESTLING OPPORTUNITIES

Practices/Training & Competitions

Adams County Youth Wrestling (ACYW) provides various opportunities throughout the year for Our Keystone Stars (and guests) to improve and grow in many areas including strength, agility, flexibility, and of course wrestling skills & technique. Over the years, we have found that the key to advancement lies in our ability to find our Keystone Stars better competition to wrestle against, and better coaches to learn from. So, we offer a well-rounded portfolio of Wrestling Opportunities for our Little Stars to get better, here are just a few…

Practices/Training:

Home Practices: 2-3 days a week we host practices for all active Keystone Stars wrestlers. Our practice formats are normally staggered (different start/end times) or segmented (in different practice rooms at same location) to allow for more specialized coaching, and to ensure that all of our wrestlers are learning/drilling based on their experience.

Away (Affiliate) Practices: 1-3 days a week we also provide Affiliate Practice Locations for our Advanced Wrestlers to attend. These rooms are basically aggregate rooms that are full of well-established seasoned wrestlers from surrounding area. Initially, these advanced options are limited in scope and velocity, but as the year progresses and we get closer to end-of-year competitions (and more kids gain experience) we tend to increase attendance.

Open Mat & Live Night(s): 1 night a week we have what’s often referred to as an “Open Mat Night”, in which our Regular Keystone Stars Practice is open to non-members (various Guest Coaches & Wrestlers in attendance from surrounding areas).

In some cases, we will turn our Open Mat Night into what we refer to as “Mon. – Sun. Night Live Match Nights”, in which we arrange for a few hours of Live Matches to be conducted in our Main Practice Room. This Live Night is designed to prepare our Keystone Stars for highly-competitive Tournaments where they will see anywhere between Four (4) and Seven (7) opponents within a 24-hour period, whereas our Open Mat Nights allow for more Technical Training and Tutelage.

Clinics, Camps, and other Training Sessions: These Wrestling Opportunities are aimed at improving our wrestler’s strength, agility, and technical wrestling abilities (of all types, levels of experience, and styles). Basically, clinics are either ½ day or a full day of advanced technical skill training that is conducted by Guest Coaches.

Camps are similar to Clinics in structure, only difference is that they normally last a few days, and often allow for overnight activities and more recreational time for our kids to bond off the mat in between sessions (which normally last 2 hours – then breaks).

Finally, Training Sessions are basically opportunities for our Little Stars to improve in areas more directly tied to strength, flexibility, agility, cardio, etc. In these instances, we either invite guest trainers or take our kids to an Affiliate Training Facility.

Competitions: (Weekends only)

Leagues (Matches & Tournaments): ACYW will always stay actively registered in one of many regional Youth Wrestling Leagues. These league options allow for weekly League Matches where anywhere from 3 to 6 Youth Wrestling Clubs will meet at a host location to wrestle non-sanctioned matches in a Round Robin format. While these matches are not highly competitive, they are great for newer wrestlers looking to gain more experience against other schools. As they year progresses, these matches get tougher leading into what is often referred to as League Championships, where all League members face-off to see who the best wrestler is in each weight, class, and division.

Tournaments: ACYW attends at least two (2) Tournaments a month, and as the year progresses this number increases. Tournaments attended are either “Novice” (i.e. Beginner/1 to 2 years’ experience) -or- “Open” (i.e. Advanced), and quite often we will Register for a Dual Experience Option that allows for both Novice and Open Divisions, so that our Keystone Stars can wrestle together as much as possible. As the year progresses, our goal is to transition as many of our children as possible into Open Division Tournaments, since this is where they will grow the most (regardless of experience).

Dual Matches/Tournaments: ACYW will attend at least one (1) Dual Match/Tournament a month, and this number increases as more of our Little Stars become Match Ready. Dual Events are similar to Jr. High/High School Matches, where full rosters are clearly defined by each team, all team members are expected to fill specific weights within each division, and only one (1) child can wrestle at each weight/division. Both teams’ face-off at each weight/division, and whoever scores the most points wins!

Dual Tournaments are essentially the same format, only with many more teams who wrestle one another in either a round robin or bracketed format vs. head-up, with the Champion determined based on who wins the most matches (or has the best winning percentage).

Cost Considerations for Wrestling Opportunities:

Whatever the case, Home Practices are $5 for Member(s) and $10 for Non-Member(s) (these costs help to pay for Guest Coaches and Facilities), unless it’s just a Regular Keystone Stars Practice, these practices are FREE for all active members. Affiliate Wrestling Opportunities are normally $10 (same; costs for Guest Coaches/Facilities). Clinics normally range from $35 to $90 depending on length & guest coaches involved. Camps are essentially the same as Clinics, only the costs are reflective upon the duration (days vs. hours). League Matches are FREE for all active Keystone Stars Wrestlers, and Tournament costs range from $15 to $45 depending on the event in question (normally based on prizes).
